FREE concert as part of the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane's free Sunday concert series. At 12noon tomorrow Sunday 22nd. with Simon Jermyn

Spirit Spout is a chapter from Melville's Moby Dick and refers to the Pequod crew, observing a elusive spouting whale in the distance, who is permanently just out of reach. It captures the essence of improvisation, and its interstices with formal composition. Improvised Music Company is excited to support leading Irish jazz practitioner Simon Jermyn in establishing himself in this fertile area of creative practice. Jermyn, is currently based in New York city, and working within the highest echelons of the city's jazz milieu. Solo performance on electric bass is unusual, but he has proven himself a laterally minded and original voice. In addition to his established reputation as an improviser, this project will be timely in his evolution as a performer straddling improvisation and contemporary music.

Three composers are committed - David Crowell (Bang on a Can), Caleb Burhans (Alarm Will Sound) and NI composer Frank Lyons. New York based instrument maker Simon Propert has built a six stringed fretted instrument - half bass and half electric guitar - the first of its kind, for Simon to identify its potential for expanded tonal and textural vocabulary. The pieces will each be 10 minutes, linked by improvisations that reference the thematic context of Spirit Spout.

Play list Midweek Music Miscellany Wednesday 11th. November 2015 from 11.30AM to 12.30PM on 103.2 Dublin City FM

1. Israel ( 3.40 ) - Louis Stewart & Brian Dunning - CD Alone Together recorded live at The Peacock Theatre Dublin claddaghrecords.com
In 1979, Irish jazz guitar legend Louis Stewart recorded a duet album with flautist Brian Dunning live on the Peacock stage entitled “Alone Together” on the Livia Label. That record was one of the many milestones of Stewart’s long and celebrated career as a guitarist of international renown.

36 years later, they tread the boards of the Peacock again, revisiting this seminal album with special guest bassist Neil O’Loghlen.
Friday 20th. November 2015 at The Peacock Theatre see improvisedmusic.ie for more

Stewart, who began his international career in 1968 when he was awarded the special jury prize at The Montreaux International Jazz Festival, has enjoyed a fertile international career both as sideman and leader. Lauded by AllMusic as “one of the all-time greats” he was a member of Ronnie Scott’s quartet and quintet for several years. Louis began recording as leader in the mid-’70s, making albums with fellow luminaries Sam Jones and Billy Higgins, before developing a long-standing association with pianist George Shearing that resulted in eight albums and an extensive world tour.

He began working with Canadian genius-orchestrator and arranger, Robert Farnon in 1976, and at least ten albums resulted: with singers Joe Williams and Eileen Farrell, with Shearing and with trombone legend J.J. Johnson, on all of which he is a prominently featured soloist.
